Careers Update

Year 8 Hi Tech Horizons Activity

All year 8 students attended a workshop on DNA delivered by the Rosalyn Franklin Institute (opens in a new tab) on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th November.  It was organised through the Business Enterprise Partnership.  There were lots of DNA bracelets being worn around the school on these days and students found it really helped cement their learning, having recently studied DNA in their science lessons.

Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 work experience is Monday 29th June to Friday 3rd July, 2020.  The deadline for completed forms is Friday 15th May 2020.  If students have any queries please ask in G121.  A parent information evening was held on Tuesday 5th November.  Presentations from the evening are at

Year 12 Work Shadowing NEW

Year 12 work shadowing days are on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd April, 2020.  The deadline for completed forms is Friday 28th February 2020.  All students are encouraged to use this opportunity to attend a place of work, relevant for both apprenticeship or employment applications and personal statements.  Students not attending a work shadowing placement will still attend school.  A Letter regarding career activities for year 12 is being sent out separately to all parents.

Careers Guidance

Independent and impartial Careers Guidance is available to all students in years 8 to 11 – to request a one to one career guidance meeting with Mrs Havill please ask in the careers office in G121.  Students are also welcome to drop in anytime with queries about career ideas, courses or option choices.

National Apprenticeship Week is 3rd to 7th February 2020.  We are running year 11 and year 13 application workshops on Tuesday 4th February as well as general assemblies throughout the week.

Moving On Fair

St John’s is hosting its annual Moving On Fair on Wednesday 29th January which includes a range of employers, universities, colleges and apprenticeship providers.   It was a really exciting and diverse event and students from year 9 are timetabled to attend as well as younger students able to visit during break time.    Further details will be sent out at the start of term 3.

Year 10 Mock Interviews

All year 10 students will have a practise interview at Marlborough Town Hall during 9th to 12th March, 2020.  Students information will be given out in their assembly on 22nd January.  If anyone would be interested in volunteering their time to be an interviewer at this event please contact Mrs F Havill.
