Tin Horse helps students prepare for design competition

St John’s Year 10 Graphic Communication students spent a morning at Marlborough-based design consultancy, Tin Horse.

Company Director Martin Bunce worked with students to introduce them to the company and explored many of the products they had designed and brought to the global marketplace. Students gained an insight into how designers develop brands, work to solve problems and transform consumer perceptions. Tin Horse, who have produced packaging solutions for companies such as Unilever, Persil, Sure and Yankee Candle, was the perfect place for students to consider their own packaging designs.

Students were taken on a tour of the workshops and design studios, seeing how designers develop ideas by hand, prototype and model ideas in 3D as well as using CAD.

Each student brought a design idea with them for their current project focusing on briefs from the national packaging design competition, Starpack. In March, the 6 best student proposals will be submitted to the competition.

Students pitched their ideas to Martin, who gave each student individual feedback to help build and improve their ideas. Students demonstrated excellent communication skills and were great ambassadors for St John’s.

Design & Technology Teacher Gary England said ” I am excited to see how students take on board their feedback and improve ideas prior to judging.”
