Final rehearsal wins praise from guest audience
A full dress rehearsal for the 2023 St John’s production of Les Misérables was performed to a small group of invited guests from the Marlborough community on the afternoon of Thursday 6th July. Guests thoroughly enjoyed the performance, with some giving the performers a standing ovation at the final bow. One guest send in a review today, describing the show as “Stupendous- we were thrilled”.
Visitors from the Marlborough Jubilee Centre which provides support, friendship for over 60s, summed up their experience: “stunning voices, great acting, wonderful, brilliantly done, everyone enjoyed”
The show is performed by a cast of talented students, and a student orchestra.
Set in early 19th-century France, Les Miserables is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his desire for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew after a bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and a slew of characters are swept into a revolutionary period in France, where a group of young idealists attempt to overthrow the government.
