Mr Nick Lewis BA (Hons), PGCE, NPQH, MCCT

CEO Excalibur

Nick Lewis, CEO of Excalibur Academies Trust from September 2024, brings extensive experience in educational leadership within schools, trusts, and national organisations. As a values driven leader, Nick has a proven track record of fostering academic excellence and collaboration across diverse school communities, ensuring success for students and staff alike.

Mr A Henderson, B.A. (Hons), PGCE

Principal, St John’s Marlborough

Alan Henderson joined St John’s Marlborough as Principal in September 2023, bringing over 25 years of experience in education. He began his career as a History teacher and has since held two previous headships, spending four years at John O’Gaunt in Hungerford and four years at Melksham Oak. A committed family man, Mr Henderson lives in Salisbury with his wife, their two children, and two energetic cocker spaniels. Outside of school, he enjoys skiing, running, watching rugby and cricket — and admits he plays far too much golf.

Ms. S Cartland BA (Hons), PGCE

Vice Principal, Designated Safeguarding Lead

Sam joined St John’s Marlborough as Vice Principal and Designated Safeguarding Lead in September 2024. Sam completed a degree in Dance and Drama before completing her PGCE in Dance. Sam’s career started as a Dance teacher before teaching a variety of subjects including Food, PE and ICT. Sam has previously led on Safeguarding, Personal Development and Pastoral Care in a West Berkshire secondary school since 2018 leading the school on a journey to move from requires improvement to a good OFSTED rating. Outside of school, Sam is married with two children aged 12 and 8. She lives in Oxfordshire and is an active member of her local rugby club, where she is also Safeguarding Lead.

Mrs C  Holman BA Hons, PGCE, NPQSL

Vice Principal – Student Engagement and Inclusion

After graduating from Royal Holloway, University of London with a degree in English Literature, Christina completed her PGCE with her first placement at St John’s. Christina has worked at St John’s since 2010 and since then has assumed various roles, most recently as Head of Faculty. She has two young children and enjoys reading, travelling and the theatre. Christina oversees the curriculum and student engagement, working directly with Heads of Faculty.

Mrs S Cardy BEd (Hons) NPQH  

Assistant Vice Principal – SEND

Sarah has been teaching for over 30 years in both primary and secondary schools in Wiltshire. She spent 9 years as a primary headteacher before moving to St John’s. She has been a SENDCo for over 20 years, enjoying the role of Director of SEND in the early days of Excalibur Academies Trust and is now solely focussed on SEND at St John’s.

Mrs R Haig-Williams BA (Hons), PGCE, MSc

Assistant Vice Principal, Director of Sixth Form

Rachel has worked in four secondary schools in Wiltshire, working her way up through a variety of roles including Head of House, Head of Humanities, Head of Sixth Form and Assistant Head. She has a degree in Theology from Exeter University and a MSc and Level 7 Apprenticeship in Educational Leadership. Rachel’s role at St John’s is to lead and manage the Sixth Form.

Mr T Nicholls BA (Hons), PGCE, MA, NPQH

Assistant Vice Principal – Upper School

After gaining a BA(Hons) in Sport Science Tom then qualified as a PE teacher at Exeter University and enjoyed many years in this role, progressing to being the Director of Physical Education at St John’s. Further development followed through an MA in Educational Management and completion of the NPQH and a number of different roles have been fulfilled. Tom has recently moved to the pastoral system working directly with the Heads of Year and Key Workers, overseeing all areas of Student Welfare within the College system.

Mr D P Rogan BSc (Hons), PGCE

Assistant Vice Principal

Mr Rogan has been teaching Maths at the school since 1996 and has been a member of the senior leadership team for many years. He is in charge of the systems used to monitor and report on student progress, examinations and the school timetable.

Mrs C. Williams BA (Hons), PGCE

Assistant Vice Principal – Lower School and Transition  

Claire graduated with Honours in Educational Psychology in 2004 at Cardiff University and completed her PGCE at Bristol University shortly after. Claire has since worked in five schools where she has been a Head of Faculty for Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as Head of Year for both Key Stages in two Wiltshire schools. In her current role she oversees the pastoral system at KS3 and Alternative Provision, working directly with Heads of Year and Key Workers as well as teaching Psychology at A Level.

Mr N Fillingham

Secondary Operations Manager – St John’s

Nathan has been with the trust since 2022 and has recently completed his level 4 diploma in business management. His background is finance, operations, and account management. Working closely with the trust and stakeholders to provide smooth running of the school. He enjoys, theatre, travelling and travelling UK canals on his narrow boat.
