CBBC Newsround Shines a Spotlight on St John’s Weather Watchers!

What began as a classroom hobby for 7U has led to something truly exciting — being filmed by CBBC Newsround!

Back in November, Mrs Aukland introduced her 7U geography class to the art of interpreting the weather, and they’ve been tracking it ever since. To support their learning, Mrs Aukland reached out to BBC Weather Watchers, asking if they had any resources to help explain different weather systems.

To her surprise, not only did the BBC respond with fantastic online materials, but they also sent a personalised video from the BBC Weather presenters themselves!  Thank you BBC Weather, this meant so much!

The excitement didn’t stop there. The BBC Weather Watchers team later got back in touch to let us know they were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Weather Watchers programme. As part of the celebrations, they wanted to inspire a new generation of amateur meteorologists by encouraging schools to get involved and install their own weather stations.

And even more exciting — they wanted to film a feature with St John’s 7U for CBBC Newsround!

On filming day, six enthusiastic students from 7U welcomed BBC weatherman Matt Taylor, Newsround presenter Ricky Boleto, and the film crew. Together, they explored the class’s weather project, their amateur weather station, and how they’ve been using data to interpret the weather.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Aukland for initiating this fantastic learning journey, to all the staff who helped make the day so memorable — and of course, to Matt Taylor, Ricky Boleto, BBC Weather Watchers and the BBC team for giving our students such an unforgettable experience.
