St John’s celebrated World Book Day 2023 in its usual style, with the school transformed by amazing book cover doors on most classrooms and office doors.

Author visit: Emma Carroll

As part of the World Book Day celebrations the whole of Year 7 & 8 took part in an online author talk from Emma Carroll. Emma describes herself as “an author of books for anyone of any age – although you’ll probably find them in a book shop or library in the 9-12 section”.

Miss Sankey, who organised the talk said “This was a great chance to get a sense of Emma’s writing process and to have a peek behind the scenes in her writing room”.

One of Emma Carroll’s books, Letters from the Lighthouse, even featured as one of our decorated doors, complete with flashing light!

Year 9 Creative Writing competition and other activities

Other activities included a 6 word novel competition for all students and staff, a daily House of Books competition based on the House of Games TV show, daily Tutor Group challenges, a Hidden Books competition, a Year 9 creative writing competition, Year 8 poetry slam competition and Year 7 book challenges.

The Year 9 Creative writing competition was set by English teacher Miss Charlot. The brief “Describe a moment in time from an interesting perspective” asked students to submit a 500 word piece of writing, choosing a moment from a favourite book and re-telling it from a new perspective.

The winner of the £50 prize, Rachel Darby in Year 9, based her writing on Watership Down. She said “I have written it from the perspective of the dog at Nuthanger Farm in Part 2 Chapter 5: The Raid. This is when the rabbits come to the farm to release the hutch rabbits so that they can join them”.

Miss Charlot said “Rachel’s writing is sophisticated, and her descriptions are not only vivid but very eloquent. Her first-person perspective really places us within the narrator’s mind, which is not easy considering it is a dog! Her control over her writing is impressive. Rachel’s flair and talent for writing really shone through!”
