Private Music Tuition at St John’s Marlborough
Private teachers provide the instrumental tuition at St John’s. Tuition fees for lessons are not set by St John’s and are paid directly to the individual teachers according to their usual rates. All students should have their own instrument. Pianos and drum kits are provided.
Lessons are given during school hours (making maximum use of breaks and lunchtime) and are organised on a rota basis so that students do not miss the same lesson each week. Sixth Form students may be able to use their study periods. Students are responsible for catching up with work missed. Students have the opportunity to take ABRSM, Trinity and Rockschool examinations depending on the instrument and teacher.
Students are encouraged to take part in one of the many music ensembles on offer, including the School Orchestra, Jazz Band, Training Band, String Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Group and Choirs as well as student-led groups. There are a number of performance opportunities during the year including multiple evening concerts, the Christmas Carol Concert at St Mary’s, the annual school production and the Savernake and Stedman Cup competitions.
The music department includes two teaching classrooms, one equipped with a full Mac suite, an ensemble room for rehearsals, a recording studio and a number of practice rooms where instrumental music lessons are taught.
