St John’s Athletic Leaders
On Friday 13th June, 12 students from St Johns attended the Year 5 & 6 athletics competition at Marlborough College.
The students were fantastic all-day; running all the events independently, organising the points, coaching the primary students how to improve, while also cheering them all on with big smiles on their faces.
They were a credit to the school and the event truly would not have been successful without their support.
Well done to all involved.

Well done to the St John’s Rounders team. They played in torrential rain at Wellington Academy on 12th June at The Wiltshire School Games qualification tournament.
They won games against Pewsey Value, Stonehenge and narrowly lost to Wellington Academy.
There was excellent fielding demonstrated with consistent bowling from Jemima Prest. India Tilley, Eva Hookway and Maggie Bonner linked well on the bases to get the batters stumped out.
The whole team should be proud of their performance.

Year 8/9 Girls Football Champions
A huge well done to the Year 8/9 Girls’ team who have been crowned champions of the North/Mid Wiltshire County Cup! The final, held at Beversbrook against St Laurence School, was an unforgettable match filled with determination, teamwork, and passion.
From the first whistle, the girls team took control of the County Cup Final with a brilliant display of attacking football. Their quick passing and confident movement saw them storm to a 3–0 lead within the first 20 minutes/ St Laurence responded with two quick goals, cutting the lead to 3–2. But under pressure, the girls remained calm, composed, and determined. In the second half, showing real character and teamwork, they added another three goals to their tally, finishing the game with a commanding 6–2 victory.
This is a truly historic achievement, as it’s the first year the County Cup has been run, making the girls the very first champions to lift the trophy! WELL DONE GIRLS!
Y9 Boys Reach Final of Swindon Schools Football Cup
St Johns booked their place in the cup final after a dramatic 4–3 win over Braydon Forest in a pulsating semi-final encounter.
Braydon Forest took the lead three times in the match but were pegged back on each occasion by the brilliance of George Bourton, who scored all four goals for St Johns in a stunning individual display.
The game started with Braydon striking first, only for Bourton to level with a calm finish. The visitors responded again, going 2–1 up before Bourton equalized once more shortly before half-time.
In the second half, Braydon looked to be heading for victory after making it 3–2, but their momentum stalled when they missed a crucial penalty—Scott Roberts producing a superb save to deny them.
That moment galvanised St Johns, and Bourton completed his hat-trick before firing in a spectacular fourth to finally give his side the lead for the first time.
Despite their efforts, Braydon couldn’t find a response, and St Johns held on to secure a memorable win.
It was a match of fine margins, but with Roberts’ heroics and Bourton’s sensational finishing, St Johns earned their spot in the final the hard way.
Well done to both teams, you demonstrated great teamwork and resilience! And congratulations to the STJ Y9 boys team for reaching the final!
Year 7 Boys Swindon Schools Cup Football Update
Y7A Team
St John’s Y7A team’s unbeaten run came to an end in the Semi Finals of the Swindon Schools cup.
They played an excellent game winning 1-0 for most of the game after a delightful first time cross from Harry Wyatt and finish by Josh Greenaway. The boys dominated the game and limited Great Western Academy to few chances.
Unfortunately, in the last two minutes, after a contentious decision against St Johns and against the run of play, GWA got an equaliser.
The game went to penalties and after some excellent penalties from both teams the game went to sudden death penalties and Unfortunately, they lost on the 7th penalty.
A massive well done to all year 7 footballers, they represented the school with pride and can hopefully go one better next year.
YB Team
St John’s Y7B team’s unbeaten run came to an end in the Semi Finals of the Swindon schools cup against a good Abbey park team. The final score of 4-1 did not do the team justice and the game was closely fought until the last 5 minutes.
The boys went into half time 1-0 down but, could easily have been 4-1 up after a number of excellent chances. The second half started as the first half finished, with St Johns dominating. We eventually got our reward after a great finish from Albie Sharpe. We continued to dominate until a mix up in defence led to us conceding a goal from 30 yards. After this, our heads dropped and we conceded two more in the last 5 minutes to make it an undeserving 4-1 score-line.
The boys represented the school well and can hopefully go one further next year.

Year 7 Football vs Kingsdown
First Round: Swindon Schools Cup
| The year 7 boys A team had their first fixture, winning 5-2 against a good Kingsdown side.
The boys made an excellent start and went 3-0 up in the first half. Some complacency snuck in at the start of the second half and Kingsdown made a comeback, getting the game to 3-2. However, the boys came out of 1st gear and grabbed 2 more goals in reply to make it a comfortable 5-2 win. Josh Greenaway was voted player of the match after scoring 2 goals. The other goals came from Harry Wyatt, Mason Allen and Wilf Bevan. Harry Wyatt also had an incredible 4 assists. The boys were a credit to the school, bring on Lydiard Park Academy in the next round! |

U13 Boys Soft Ball Indoor Tape Final
Match summary
The U13 boys team had a trip to Chippenham to play in the U13 Wiltshire Cricket Finals.
The boys lost their two group games and their play-off game to reach the quarter finals.
The results don’t tell the full story however, losing to Hardenhuish by 5 runs after chasing their score of 47. We failed with another chase, losing to Sheldon in the play-off game by 2 runs. Needing 3 off the last ball to win we were unfortunately bowled out.
Out of the 12 schools that attended, the 3 schools we faced made the semi finals of the competition, this demonstrates how unlucky we were with the draw. The boys were a credit to the school and hopefully will get further in the next competition.

U13 Girls Cricket Final at Chippenham Cricket Dome
![]() |
| On 7th February, the Year 7 and 8 girls went to a Wiltshire indoor cricket tournament. We played three matches, won the first 2 and lost in the quarter finals. Our batting was great: we hit lots of boundaries and Lucy even got two 6’s! On the other hand, our bowling was even better! Izzy got several people out with her fantastic bowling and Peggy also did well! Next time, we could improve our catching and knowing when to run. However, we did absolutely amazingly, and everybody should be very proud of themselves! The quarter final was a tough game and they beat us with 10 balls remaining. Our bowling was excellent, and we managed to bowl 4 players out in two overs, however our batting let us down and we were all out after 7 overs.

Netball Year 8
Congratulations to our Y8 Netball girls who won the Area Netball tournament!
Our team gained significant confidence from the first game, which set us up well for the remaining matches. Starting with a strong win, we demonstrated excellent teamwork and communication. Everyone supported each other, and we cheered for every achievement. All the goals were the result of collective efforts.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the court, celebrating every success with high fives. Our interceptions were impressive, and we moved the ball down the court effectively. Each player stayed focused on their opponent and communicated with great intensity.
Our strengths lay in our communication, passing, spacing, and defensive coverage. However, there are areas where we can improve, such as footwork, avoiding obstruction, minimizing contact, and maintaining balance.
Overall, we were a very strong team in the first tournament of the year. We all enjoyed the games and loved cheering each other on. We had a fantastic time and are eager to secure more wins in the future. We were undefeated in all of our games and were crowned tournament champions.

Netball Year 9
On the 26th November, Year 9 Girls netball team played a home game against Pewsey Vale School. It was a great first match to start us off, resulting in a 10 – 6 win to St John’s.
Pewsey took the first goal, but we quickly caught up finishing with 1 – 1 in the first quarter. By the end of the first two quarters, we were in the lead with 3 and Pewsey 2. The second half was a lot fiercer and more ended us with a 4 goal difference. Everyone played amazingly but there was improvement as the match went on. Our strengths were finding space away from the bunch and communication. However, a thing to work on is watching our footwork so therefore pivoting practice.
Player of the match was Isla Miahs who not only scored the majority of our goals but also some very impressive ones from the very edge of the D. St John’s Netball Leaders – At the Primary Schools Annual Netball Festival
St John’s took 14 students to assist in leading the Year 5 & 6 Annual Netball Festival held at Marlborough College on 07th November. The leaders consisted of students from years 9 &10, who volunteered to umpire and coach keen Year 5 & 6 students in a competitive netball tournament. Daisy Godfrey, Sophie Milward, Grace Miness and Esme Nicholas already volunteer in their own time at the key stage 3 St John’s netball club. This was a chance for them to put their umpiring skills to practice in a more competitive situation.
All of the girls acted as positive role models for the younger students and were a credit to St John’s in how they conducted themselves in such a positive manner. It was amazing to see Daisy Godfrey, Sophie Millward, Esme Nicholas and Rosie Hughes confidence grow as the tournament progressed. They became more assertive with their decision making and used their whistle to good effect.
There were competitive matches against Ramsbury Primary School and Marlborough St Mary’s and Ava Pathania & Meg McGrath ensured the game ran fairly ignoring any competitive tension between the players and teachers. Their presence on the court was well received along with their decisive decision making.
A big thank you to all netball leaders who made the tournament possible: Betty Brenk, Daisy Cox, Beatrice Edwards, Daisy Godfrey, Sophie MiIlward, Esme Nicholas, Rosie Hughes, Anna Fleur Hartman, Emelia Houchin, Meg McGrath, Emily Nelson, Georgia Norris, Grace Miness, and Ava Pathania.
Year 9 Boys Football Team vs Marlborough College
Final score 5-5.
Throughout the game the whole team passed the ball round really well, also with some good saves by Oakley Flippance in between the sticks. We are now 1-0 down, but the team spirit is still up and Owen Davenport rockets one in of the bar to make it 1-1, followed by a goal by Zeb Scott-Harden with great play by Benji Cooper, George Bourton and with Zeb, the goal scorer, to make it 2-1. Marlborough college score 2 quick goals for them to go up 3-2, but Benji Cooper puts in a lovely cross which ended up in the back of the net to make it 3-3. It then goes out for a corner with a lovely cross by Benji Cooper and the goal scorer Archie Morris, towered over the defenders, and placed it in the back of the net with a great header to make it 4-4.
With a couple of minutes to go, going 5-4 down, we passed it around on the edge of the box and Archie Morris’s toe punted it in the bottom corner!
Great game from everyone out there they all put in a shift. Well done to all the boys.

During the second half we scored two more astonishing tries again, one from Oscar and an outstanding try from Will Stallabrass. Year 8 Rugby Semi Finals vs Royal Wootton Bassett Academy

St. John’s put on an outstanding display of rugby in their 8-1 victory over Royal Wootton Bassett Academy. The match was a showcase of skill, strength, and teamwork, with Arthur Celliers earning the well-deserved title of Man of the Match. Celliers was a standout performer, delivering a series of bone-crunching tackles, powerful runs, and pinpoint assists, making him an integral part of the team’s success.
The try scorers for St. John’s were Alex Powell (4 tries), Harry Graham (1 try), Grayson Adams (2 tries), and Arthur Celliers (1 try). Powell was in exceptional form, proving to be a constant threat to the opposition’s defence. His four tries were a testament to his pace, vision, and finishing ability.
However, there was one moment of individual brilliance that stood out above all others: Alex Powell’s try, which saw him run the length of the pitch to score in what can only be described as a thrilling display of speed and agility. It was a moment that left fans and teammates alike in awe, earning Powell the title of Moment of the Match.
Despite several standout individual performances, the true strength of St. John’s was in their team play. The players worked seamlessly together, moving the ball with pace and precision, creating countless scoring opportunities. Arthur Celliers’ leadership and all-around performance were crucial, but this victory was very much a collective effort.
Royal Wootton Bassett Academy showed great resilience, but they were unable to break down the strong defence of St. John’s. Every player on the field played their part, and it was a well-rounded team effort that led to this dominant win.

Year 7 Rugby Swindon Cup Finals vs Royal Wootton Bassett Academy
We played Royal Wootton Bassett for the Swindon Cup Finals and we played valiantly, but that wasn’t enough to stop a strong team clinching victory. We started strong with each team having 3 tries at the end of the first half. However, RWB win was secured after a strong second half from our opponents. The final score was 4 tries to St. John’s to 10 to Wotton Bassett. They were deserving winners of a tough match. Overall, we couldn’t be disappointed with our performance in this tournament. We did well at ripping, tackling and passing, however the team needs to work on rucking, and not getting held up.
Our try scorers were, Victorious Olundlade and Josh Greenaway.

Year 7 Rugby vs Lawn Manor
Overall, St johns had an amazing game with the score ending up to be 9-3, and even though Lawn Manor had the advantage in size and strength, St Johns came out on top due to their tactical mind set. Some highlights of the game where that Victorious did some amazing rips and Barty impressed with his tackling. Even though some of our team are new to the sport they didn’t let that affect the game and showed what they could do. After the game three of our players were nominated to be man of the match Victorious, Barty and Josh but in the end, Barty was chosen.

Game 1 – BWS C (13-10) St Johns

St Johns opened their tournament against a strong team. It took a few minutes for the team to gel making sure that they played as one. The team began communicating well which saw a flurry of baskets, however defensively they needed to play with a bit more teamwork and a little more physicality. Louis Johnson led all scorers with 6 points while Catalina Moffat Gonzales and Charles Lai came away with some valuable steals on defensive.
Game 2 – BWS B (13-9) St Johns
In their second game St Johns played like a completely different team. The first game nerves had clearly disappeared as they began to play with the confidence that perhaps was missing from before. Against more challenging opponents St Johns were able to concede the same amount of point which a testament to teams’ improvement on the defensive end. Jayden Chui kept the team working hard, motivating others through his own performance. Myles Degouve scored at a pivotal point in the game which allow St Johns to keep it close towards the end. A much stronger performance by all.
Game 3 – BWS A (-) St Johns
St Johns final game would be against the formidable BWS A team. A team that had not lost a game in the tournament. Going into the match our goal was simple, to improve on our previous performance and work hard no matter the result. St Johns played with intensity against the opposition, more so than in their previous matches and managed to squeeze 6 points past the home team’s top squad. This is more than other teams had managed so far in tournament. Strong play from the younger players; Ti Bhatt-Yates, Sophia Lucas and Tom Eke were of particularly importance in the game and offer exciting potential for next year’s tournament.
Overall, the team showed great sportsmanship and true resilience. Well done St Johns!
